RESEARCH CELL

Research is the driving force behind innovation and knowledge building, and for it to thrive there should be a substantial amount of time and resources allocated to the discipline. At Gandhi Shikshan Bhavan’s Smt. Surajba College of Education, we have a rich tradition of investing in research as our focus is to nurture and promote a culture of reason among our students and faculty. To meet research-related needs, the institution conducts and promotes studies in new and emerging areas of education such as ICT, psychology, philosophy etc.

The cell is also actively involved in holding seminars, workshops and talks by inviting some of the best minds in fields including technology, medicine and commerce so that our students have a well-rounded perspective about their area of specializations.

WOMEN’S CELL

The institution’s Women’s cell tries to tirelessly promote gender-related activities and takes up causes linked with women’s safety and education.

It organizes workshops, seminars and programs on various subjects, including gender equality, women’s empowerment and violence against women, by inviting experts and specialists from a wide array of fields.

It is also instrumental in celebrating the International Women’s Day.

ANTI-RAGGING CELL

The institution takes ragging and harassment issues very seriously. In this regard, it has formed an anti-ragging cell to handle anything related to the problem. The notice board of the cell prominently displays a government circular, which warns students about the consequences they are likely to face if they are caught ragging.

Ragging is strictly prohibited within and outside college premises. Any student caught ragging is expected to face severe action including expulsion from the College.

The institution takes student counseling very seriously and assigns a faculty member to lead and guide each group of students. The member is responsible for assessing and monitoring a student’s performance in studies and other activities, while ensuring that she/he is meeting all the goals aligned with the Mission and Vision of the college.

STUDENT COUNCIL

The council’s main aim is to encourage students to take up leadership roles. Every academic year the college conducts an election to elect members to the student council. The council is responsible for coordination among various departments and plays a big role in planning and hosting events and extra-curricular activities.

SPECIAL CELL

The cell’s aim is to provide guidance and assistance to students on matters related to academia and examinations. The cell also conducts remedial lectures for students who need that extra bit of help.

The cell has a Whatsapp group to inform students about the details of these remedial lectures such as venue, topic, date and time.

The cell is focused on driving students to uphold values and ethics in the society. It helps students to inculcate values so that they can stand out as responsible citizens and excel in their professional endeavors. The cell conducts many activities such as webinars and events to highlight the importance of values, while making students aware of their responsibilities to the society.

ADMISSION CELL

To Participate in the decision-making process for student admissions based on college policies and guidelines. Prepares and present applicant reports to the college management. Participate in educational events, college fairs, information sessions and recruitment activities as a representative of the college.
Collaborate with other colleges for admission activities including student registration, testing and recruitment.
Perform college administrative and clerical activities when needed.

THE PLACEMENT CELL

Introduction –
The placement Cell of GSB’S Smt. Surajba College of Education is extremely dynamic, with I/C Principal Dr. Judy Grace Andrews and two faculty members being part of the committee. The cell is responsible for holding on-campus and off-campus interviews for B. Ed students. The committee members set the date and time for placements and invite institutions, including schools, junior colleges and NGOs, to conduct interviews through the placement cell. The cell has been highly efficient in placing students in the last 10 years. It also maintains a database since 2005.

Functions of the Placement cell at GSB

The placement cell at Gandhi Shikshan Bhavan Smt. Surajba College of Education follows a rigorous process to ensure that students find the right kind of jobs. The members are in touch with many schools, that may have job openings. The letters for on-campus interviews are scrutinized and the dates for campus Interviews are given to the schools. The students are coached on facing interviews, personality development and writing resumes.  To ensure that students are better prepared, the institution generally keeps a decent gap in the interviews schedule.

On Campus Interviews:

On-campus interviews take place on scheduled dates. After the interview, schools are expected to send their preferred list of candidates to the cell. Students are informed immediately and prepared for an orientation. A recommendation letter from the principal is given to those who wish to appear for interviews.

Off Campus Interviews:

All the letters for off-campus interviews are displayed on the student’s notice board. Students, who are keen on facing interviews, are briefed in advance before being sent to the institutions. The date of interview and demo are made known immediately to the students. The required information is displayed generally on the college notice board

The committee plans and schedules the interviews every year in March. More than 50% of the students are placed at different schools through the placement cell.

VENTEL CELL – VOCATIONAL EDUCATION NAI TALIM EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

The main goal of the cell is to integrate Mahatma Gandhi’s “Nai Talim”, an educational model that stresses on imparting vocational education, together with the current educational model. The cell conducts seminars and workshops to push for the need of vocational education through “Nai Talim Ventel” week. A multidisciplinary international students’ webinar on the topic, Mental Health and Well-being, was organized by IQAC and VENTEL on Nov. 4 and 5 last year. That apart, an online awareness program about vocational training was organized in collaboration with C.B Kora Institute of Village Industries, Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Government of India, The MGNCRE Vocational Education Nai Talim and Experiential Learning (VENTEL) Institutional Competition

SWACHCHTA ACTION PLAN

Swachhta has been given top priority by the government of India.
All Institutions are expected to strictly maintain hygiene standards at their campuses so that students have a clean and rich atmosphere to explore their strengths and talents. “Along with education, swachhta is also a precious lesson that can be learnt in education Institutions as it defines a student’s personality,” said Prakash Javadekar, Minister for Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.
Based on Javadekar’s recommendations, MGNCRE has been asked to create various tools to help HEIs drive the message of Swachhta in their students. The Swachhta Action Plan goals were met by hosting workshops on Waste Management and Social Entrepreneurship.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)

As per the guidelines of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) every accredited institution should establish an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) as a post-accreditation quality sustenance measure. Since quality enhancement is a continuous process, the IQAC becomes a part of the institution’s system and works towards realizing the goals of quality enhancement and sustenance. IQAC was conceived as a mechanism to build and ensure a quality culture at the institutional level.

The primary aim of IQAC is:

  • To develop a system for conscious, consistent and catalytic action to improve the academic and administrative performance of the institution.
  • To promote measures for institutional functioning towards quality enhancement through internalization of quality culture and institutionalization of best practices.

UGC PLANNING BOARD

The committee is responsible for staying abreast with the latest rules, regulations and guidelines published by the UGC on its website and make suitable recommendations to the institute’s management. The committee also oversees the activities of allied committees, including the Anti-Ragging Committee and the Grievance Redressal Committee, and ensures that they meet the UGC’s latest norms. The UGC Planning Board holds meetings at regular intervals to assess the progress made by allied committees and provides suggestions when there is a need.

PURCHASE COMMITTEE

A Purchase Committee is a group of designated staff established for independent review and evaluation of purchasing documentation whose main role is to recommend the most appropriate supplier or service provider based on price, quality, stock availability, references etc.
Purchase Committees (PC) should be established and managed by the head of the Institute and they have the ultimate responsibility for the successful outcome of the evaluation process. For all PC meetings, the head of the organization should act as the chairperson with a non-voting role.

The roles and responsibilities of the PC should include:

  •   To analyze quotations provided by the logistics department, and provide recommendation for approval
  •   To ensure all documentation is accurately completed
  •   To ensure that the supplies/services quoted for comply with what was requested.
  •   Seek clarification from suppliers/service providers where necessary.
  •   Ensuring proportionality, transparency, accountability and fairness in the procurement process.
  •   Ensuring all relevant documentation is prepared prior to PC meeting.
  •   Involvement in the evaluation discussion.
  •   Ensuring that the Quote Evaluation Form is completed accurately.
  •   Ensuring all necessary procurement procedures are properly followed including any relevant donor procedures.
  •   Ensuring samples are available for review if relevant and are returned to all unsuccessful bidders.

LIBRARY COMMITTEE

The Library Committee provides a forum for open discussion of matters relating to the Library and its services. Its membership is made up of the Director, and library representatives, faculty representatives and student representatives.

Objectives of Library Committee

To decide and adopt policies to govern the management and programme of the library.

To prepare the annual budget, rules and regulations of the library.

The committee also looks into students complains, if any

Functions and duties of Library Committee –

STAFF WELFARE COMMITTEE

The committee is a consultative and deliberative body with the authority to make recommendations on matters that have a significant bearing on the working environment of the staff. The purpose of the committee is to promote student welfare, advice and support. They achieve this by promoting various welfare issues and by working with student-led groups. The aim is to represent the views of students through welfare-related platforms, including the student council.

COLLEGE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The main objective of the College Development Committee (CDC) is to prepare a comprehensive development plan that focuses on academia, admissions, administration, placement and infrastructure at the institution.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Prepares overall teaching program or academic calendar at the institute
  2. Recommends management on research and consultancy-related activities in college
  3. Ensures an effective use of ICT in campus
  4. Organizes students and employee welfare scheme at the institute
  5. Reviews reports and monitors processes of all existing committee
  6. Reviews IQAC Report and make suitable action or recommendation
  7. Maintains discipline and ensures that students follow all rules and regulations

DLLE-The Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension (DLLE) was established on October 12, 1978 and has been recognized as a Statutory Department and one of the authorities of the University of Mumbai since 1994 to promote a meaningful and sustained rapport between the Universities and the community.

The students of Degree colleges from the faculty of Arts, Commerce, Science, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Education and Management are awarded Ten Additional Marks at the final exam on completion of 120 hours of work on the Extension Work Project undertaken and submission of the Project Report under University Ordinance 229.A in an academic year.

The college students are enrolled for extension work projects and perform various activities for the social awareness based on various issues / problems in the society such as Save Girl Child, Pollution, Aids, Global Warming, Environment, Tree Plantation, Importance of Education, Illiteracy, Child Labour, Dowry Deaths, Malnutrition, Watershed Management and so many. The students are creating awareness about these social problems / issues through various activities such as Street Play, Exhibition, Poster Making,Songs, Speech, Survey, Elocution, Seminar & Conferences.

STUDENT’S WELFARE COMMITTEE

The committee rolls out policies set by the university to facilitate a positive academic environment so that students can achieve success in their chosen fields with the least obstruction. The committee works for the overall welfare of the students by focusing on development, counselling, social activities and the like.

The committee’s goals include:

SEXUAL HARASSMENT COMMITTEE

Gandhi Shikshan Bhavan strives to provide a congenial and conducive environment, where students, teachers and non-teaching staff can work together without any fear of violence, harassment, exploitation and intimidation.
The institute takes gender-related violence, sexual harassment and gender discrimination very seriously. Any instances of such crimes are met with swift action.
The Supreme Court of India has stated that every instance of sexual harassment is a violation of “Fundamental Rights” under Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Constitution of India, and amounts to a violation of the “Right to Freedom” under Article 19 (1)(g).
Every member is expected to be aware of the commitment to the right to freedom of expression and association.

INFORMATION OFFICERS UNDER 2005 ACT

The Right to Information Act, 2005 (22 of 2005) has been enacted by the Parliament and has come into force from 15 June, 2005. This Act provides for right to information for citizens to secure access to information under the control of public authorities in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority. All Universities and Colleges established by law made by Parliament or by State Legislature or by notification by the appropriate Government or owned, controlled or substantially financed directly or indirectly by funds provided by the Government shall come within the meaning of a Public Authority under this Act.

MARATHI VANGMAY MANDAL

The institution is at the forefront of celebrating the richness of the state’s Marathi culture and hosts a plethora of events in the language.

Some of the programs conducted by the institution include courses on Marathi prose and poetry by eminent authors and poets. The Institution also conducts talks, skits and exhibitions in the language to bolster the knowledge of Marathi among students.

The college hosts an annual event, called Marathi Vangmay Divas, in February as well as Vachan Prerana Din and Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din to showcase Marathi language and culture in all its glory.
